It’s a Sea Of Blue in Light Fingers Stakes

Mark Smith - Saturday February 15

Godolphin’s trio of Group 1 winning three-year-old fillies, Flit, Lyre and Sidestep went 1-2-3 when they resumed in Saturday’s Group II Light Fingers Stakes at Randwick.

The Group 1 Thousand Guineas heroine Flit ended her spring campaign with a well-beaten fourth in the Group II Wakeful Stakes at Flemington on November 2 but she sparkled on her autumn campaign debut. All too easy for Flit in the Light Fingers Stakes images Steve Hart

With Hugh Bowman in the saddle and fitted with a set of blinkers, the James Cummings-trained daughter of Medaglia d’Oro (USA) powered home to defeat Lonhro’s Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes winner Lyre by one and three-quarter lengths with Sidestep’s Group 1 Golden Slipper winner Kiamichi another half-length back in third.

“Hugh and I had been talking about the use of them (blinkers) for a little while,” Cummings said.

The way she returned and trailing against the older horses , getting to the line well, she couldn’t afford to lose her focus for fifty metes when the pressure went on,” Cummings said.

“When Hugh gives you that feedback, you take notice and with them on she was able to apply herself and show exactly the sort of promise that we had been getting from her over the last twelve months.

"With the blinkers on she was able to apply herself and show the promise we have been getting from her over the last 12 months.

"I dare say she is the filly to beat (in the Surround Stakes)  in two weeks.

Flit advances her record to 3 wins, 2 seconds and a third from 8 starts with earnings of $1,034,290.

A half-sister to stakes-placed Flow (Street Cry), Flit is the best of three winners from as many to race out of the Group III placed Redoute's Choice mare Glissade, a daughter of Group III AJC Breeders Classic winner Steflara (Zabeel).

Glissade has a yearling filly by Street Boss (USA) named Sliders and a filly foal by Frosted (USA).

She was covered by Medaglia d'Oro’s son Astern last spring.
