The Battle for Champion 2YO Sire Title

Tara Madgwick - Tuesday March 25

The $5million Group I ATC Golden Slipper used to have a massive bearing on the 2YO sires list by earnings and whoever sired the winner was a moral to take Champion 2YO Sire honours, but with a proliferation of $1million juvenile races that is no longer the case.

Arrowfield Stud’s Snitzel hit the top of the list with his brilliant daughter Marhoona winning at Rosehill on Saturday, but with news she is headed to the spelling paddock the door is ajar for some of the other sires to take up the challenge.

First season sires Ole Kirk and Wootton Bassett (GB) are well placed to have a good crack with Prestige Forever winning the Listed Moonee Valley Pearl last Saturday for Ole Kirk, while Wodeton nearly got the dream result for Wootton Bassett when narrowly beaten in the Slipper.

Ole Kirk

With seven winners from 12 starters and three of them stakes-winners, Ole Kirk couldn’t be doing much more and Wootton Bassett also has some very promising horses waiting in the wings that give the impression the longer back season races will suit nicely.

I Am Invincible is a bit of a sleeper and with four stakes-winners has had more 2YO SW’s than any other sire – Vinrock, Inkaruna, My Gladiola and Hi Barbie
