Not
many Darren Weir trained debut winners get under the guard of punters, but this
one did at Mildura on Tuesday.
Three year-old Americain (USA) colt American Sunday was friendless in the
market drifting from $10 out to $20 before the start of the 1300 metre maiden.
He settled a clear last for Harry Coffey, but unwound a powerful finishing
burst out wide in the straight to surge clear and win by nearly two lengths in
a dominant display.
A $25,000 Inglis Premier purchase for his trainer from the Swettenham Stud
draft, American Sunday runs for a syndicate that includes Limerick Lane's Gerry
Ryan, who co-owned his sire Americain and also bred this colt.
American Sunday has an impressive pedigree being the second winner from Redoute's
Choice mare Another Sunday, whose dam is a half-sister by Sunday Silence to
leading sire Not a Single Doubt.
It's a prolific Black Type family, albeit associated with speed, so it will be
interesting to see just what American Sunday can do with the top quality staying
blood of American added to the mix.
American Sunday is the fourth Australian winner for Melbourne Cup hero
Americain, who stands at Swettenham Stud at a fee of $11,000.
