Just four of last year's field in the Caulfield Cup have made it through to be nominated for the 2017 running of Australia's premier 2400m handicap.
The Robert Hickmott-trained Sir Isaac Newton finished seventh behind Jameka in 2016 and is the best finisher from last year among the 142 entries for this year with 22 from overseas.
Hickmott also has last year's Melbourne Cup winner Almandin, Sydney Cup winner Gallante and the 2015 Herbert Power Stakes winner Amralah nominated.
Last year's classic winning crop of three-year-olds including Jon Snow (Australian Derby), Gingernuts (NZ Derby), Egg Tart (Australasian and Queensland Oaks), Bonneval (Australian and NZ Oaks), Inference (Randwick Guineas), Lasqueti Spirit (VRC Oaks) and Volatile Mix (South Australian Derby) are all entered.
Volatile Mix's trainer Darren Weir has nominated 20 for the race including the Australian Cup winner Humidor and Japanese import Admire Deus.
Hartnell missed the race in 2016 but is among the entries for Godolphin along with Mornington Cup winner Tally for trainer James Cummings while Charlie Appleby has nominated Francis Of Assisi and Qewy.
Aidan O'Brien has nominated Johannes Vermeer and US Army Ranger for both the Caulfield and Melbourne Cup as is the Joseph O'Brien-trained three-year-old Rekindling, owned by Lloyd Williams.
Other international entries include Dal Harraild for Newmarket-based William Haggas and Max Dynamite and Wicklow Brave for Willie Mullins.
