First to $1million

Tara Madgwick - Wednesday August 23
We are three weeks into the new racing season and already reigning champion sire Snitzel has taken up residence in the top slot of the Australian Leading Sires List as the first stallion to post progeny earnings of $1million since August 1.

SnitzelWith 19 winners from 99 runners including four stakes-winners, Arrowfield's superstar Snitzel also leads by winners and stakes-winners setting a swift tempo that will make him hard to catch for champion sire honours in 2018.

His four stakes-winners straight off the bat are three year-old colts Dracarys, Menari and Jukebox, while the fourth is his quality older mare Sweet Redemption.

Winx's ill-fated sire Street Cry has also gotten off to a great start with 15 other winners outside of Winx, but will have no two year-olds this year as his last crop of foals are now three.

Fastnet Rock has a cracking crop of three year-olds to run for him this year with Formality and Catchy both returning last weekend in a manner to suggest more wins are in store, so expect the Coolmore favourite to lay down the gauntlet to Snitzel as the spring progresses.

Widden Stud's Star Witness is the stallion that has really come out of the blocks running with 16 winners including unbeaten stakes-winner Crown Witness. The leading third crop sire last season, he looks well placed to consolidate on that success and establish himself among the top echelon of sires.
