Group Three on Debut for Capitalist Colt Sebonack

Mark Smith - Saturday February 5

Hollywood-handsome Capitalist colt Sebonack earned a spot in the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes following a dominant win in the Group III Lamaro's Hotel Chairman's Stakes at Caulfield on Saturday.

Carrying the Spendthrift Farm silks, the Michael, Wayne and John Hawkes-trained colt was a third consecutive winner for Jye McNeil.

Given the run of the race from an inside barrier, Sebonack defeated the Sebring filly Nanagui by one and a quarter lengths with the Capitalist filly Kiko a half-length back in third.

Wayne Hawkes said Sebonack was the benchmark for the stables two-year-olds.

"It was good to get that one out of the road. Now I know where the rest of them sit, and I'm not telling you if you ask me," Hawkes said.

"It was a good level to see where some of our others are. We've got a few lined up over the next couple of weeks, and I'm happy.

"His first jump out was pretty impressive.

"He trialled up enormous, and he did everything right and got here today and did everything beautifully well.

"You never quite know with them when they're at home, and then you come to race day and parade them. I was impressed the way he paraded and looked so well. He got the job done.

"I thought Jye might have given him a bit more of a dig out of the gates. He was a bit casual, and the horse took a couple of strides to get into his gear. At home, he normally hits the ground running.

Hawkes would not commit to running in the Blue Diamond.

Every week now there'll be a good horse coming out and winning a good two-year-old race," he said.

"Next week we've got the Blue Diamond Preludes, and we'll be talking up something else.

“We will go home and see how he pulls up. It was a great effort and well done to all the connections.

"This was a 1000 metre race around Caulfield and the Blue Diamond in 1200. There'll be a full field and about ten times the pressure of today.

"There’s a little bit to go yet, but winners are grinners and we’re happy.”

Purchased by Spendthrift Australia for $260,000 from the Sledmere Stud draft at the 2021 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale, Sebonack is the first winner for the Morphettville winner Profound Wisdom.

A daughter of Al Samer, Profound Wisdom was a $245,000 purchase by Peter Boyle from the Rothwell Park draft at the 2019 Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale.

She is a half-sister to Group II STC Skyline Stakes-winner, young Aquis Farn stallion Santos (I Am Invincible), and the Japanese Group III winner Melagrana (Fastnet Rock) from the family of Emirates Park Stud’s wonderful mare Elated Lady.

Profound Wisdom has a yearling filly by Rubick and a filly foal by Dundeel.

She was covered by Golden Slipper winner Farnan last spring.

Sebonack becomes the fifth stakes-winner for Newgate Farm’s Capitalist.
