$1.4 Million Redoute's Choice Colt Heading to the Magic Millions 2yo Classic

Mark Smith - Saturday December 28

A striking Redoute’s Choice colt with a stallions pedigree, King’s Legacy had plenty riding on his performance in Saturday’s Group III Magic Millions B.J. McLachlan Stakes, not the least being he needed to win to earn a place in the $2 million Magic Millions 2yo Classic at the Gold Coast in a fortnight.

And win he did. With Kerrin McEvoy in the saddle King’s Legacy chased down the top-class Choisir filly Every Rose to win by a half-length with Not A Single Doubt’s honest daughter Euphoric Summer two and three-quarter lengths back in third.

A luckless third in what must be the midweek race of the season at Rosehill on December 11 won by Aim from Blondeau, King’s Legacy travelled sweetly in the run before McEvoy asked for the supreme effort and he never flinched over the final two furlongs. The race favourite Blondeau was well back in the field and worked to the line without ever threating to finish fourth, which will not earn him enough prizemoney to take his place in the 2yo Classic.

Kerrin McEvoy said the son of Redoute’s Choice has improved through his preparation.

He’s learned a lot from his trials to his races and was unlucky not to go to the wire with Aim so we came here with confidence today,” McEvoy said.

“The Snowdens have him heading on the right path.”

Peter Snowden expressed surprise that King’s Legacy was so close in the run.

“All his trials early he showed no gate speed at all and I kept saying to James (Herron) this guy wants a mile for sure, so we were patient with him,” Snowden said.

“At his first start they went quick early then backed the pace off and soon as they did he got up on the bridle and we saw what happened there. He learnt a bit from the run and Kerrin was a bit more aggressive on him and was a lot closer than I thought he would be, Coming to the corner I thought he was just on the bridle and it would take a good effort to pick the leader up but to his credit he dug deep and came again so that’s the sign of a handy horse.

“It was just he second start and there is no doubt he is going to be a quality colt.”

The third top-priced lot at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, King’s Legacy was purchased by James Harron Bloodstock for $1.4 million out of the Segenhoe Stud draft.

It was a big day for James Harron and trainers Peter and Paul Snowden after the $450,000 Magic Millions purchase Nitrous booked his ticket for the Gold Coast earlier in the day with a strong win at Randwick. The Snowdens also have Aim, Sanscy, Stellar Pauline and Strike qualified for the $2 million showpiece at the Gold Coast.

King’s Legacy is the second foal and the first to race out of the multiple stakes-placed Hussonet mare Breakfast In Bed.

Purchased by Paul Moroney Bloodstock for $220,000 at the 2011 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale, Breakfast In Bed was a 7-time winner.

Her pedigree received a big update when her half-sister Oohood (I Am Invincible) won the Group 1 ATC Flight Stakes and placed in the ATC Golden Slipper Slipper, Sires' Produce Stakes, MRC Caulfield Guineas and Blue Diamond Stakes.

Breakfast In Bed and Oohood are out of the Sydney winning Sunday Silence mare Bella Sunday who is a half-sister to Not A Single Doubt out of Snippets half-sister Singles Bar (Rory’s Jester).

King’s Legacy becomes the 170th stakes-winner for the Arrowfield Stud legend Redoute’s Choice

Breakfast In Bed has a yearling filly by Redoute’s Choice and a filly foal by I Am Invincible.

Redoute’s Choice has 10 catalogued for the Magic Millions.
