The first crop of Sun Stud's multiple Group One winner, PALENTINO, will be on offer at Melbourne's 2019 Inglis Great Southern Weanling Sale on Sunday and Monday - and they're outstanding types.
The Great Southern Palentinos are the initial draft to be presented on 'home turf', as the brilliant chestnut has already had the half brother to South African Group winner, Fish River, sell to Two Bays Farm for $75,000 at last month's Gold Coast Magic Millions National Weanling Sale.
A striking son of the hugely prolific Teofilo – 83 stakes winners – Palentino emulated the legendary Zabeel by capturing both the Group One Australian Guineas and Group One Makybe Diva Stakes, proving himself the dominant miler of his generation.
It's hardly surprising Palentino has enjoyed massive support since retiring to Sun Stud in 2017, covering 112 mares that first spring and – indicative of what's on display at the Great Southern – the appearance of his first foals saw his book increase to 155 in 2018.
Buyers will have plenty to choose from at Oaklands Junction including the Eldon Park consigned half brother to Moonee Valley Group winner, Take Pride, from Shabtis (Lot 403), a half sister to Mummify.
South Australia's Cornerstone Stud, meanwhile, will present two Palentinos at the Great Southern: a filly (Lot 169) from the Group placed Gossip Guru, in turn a half sister to 3-time stakes winner, Gamblin' Guru, along with the first foal (Lot 474) of Unfurl, a multiple stakes placed winner of five and half sister to stakes winners Inferno and Ortem Fire.
Ponderosa Park's filly from Little Things (Lot 249) is a cracking type and is out of a half sister to Sandown Guineas (1600m) and Carbine Club Stakes (1600m) winner, Ringerdingding. And Chatswood Stud will be expecting big things from the first foal of Dowager Girl (Lot 115), a half sister to multiple stakes winning 2YO, Dowager Queen, who also ran placings in the Group One VRC Oaks, Flight Stakes and Manawatu Sires' Produce.
Inspections at Oaklands Junction commenced on Wednesday, so keep your eye out for the Palentinos … because they've got their eye on you!
Hoofnote: While the action should heat up the sale ring, the weather in Melbourne for the next week isn't looking crash hot for those intrepid inspectors … fortunately Sun Stud has a marquee outside Barn G at Oaklands Junction where you're welcome to drop in for a pie and drink!
