Thoroughbred Showjumping – It’s Time for the Breeders to Come on Board

Tara Madgwick - Thursday June 13
The Thoroughbred Sport Horse Association aims to create a second career and a demand for retired thoroughbred racehorses with a successful program of events at the recent Aquis Champions Tour to be followed up in July by the next round of the competition at the Tamworth NNWSJC Winter Championships (July 18 – 21).

Strawberry Hill Stud sponsored the thoroughbred classes at Aquis on the Gold Coast, which were well supported and produced the following winners and place-getters with Queensland bred thoroughbreds featuring prominently as you would imagine. Pictured above is Robert Moffatt with Sausalito, winner of the 1.20 Final.

TSHA's main objective is to work with show organisers to create dedicated thoroughbred classes and to secure funding from the Racing and Breeding Industry for prize money for those classes, thereby creating a market for off-the-track horses.

Retraining and rehoming will be given a huge boost once the thoroughbred competition circuit is up and running as it creates a market, a demand and a reason to purchase a thoroughbred.

TSHA classes will be a training ground for young people who are competent with and have an understanding of thoroughbreds. It will be a natural progression for these young enthusiasts to go from sport horse competition to work in the Racing and Breeding Industry.

The team behind Thoroughbred Sport Horse Association bring a wealth of experience to the cause.

Krissy Harris and her thoroughbred jumper Mr Popeye, NSW Horse of the Year in 1997
Krissy Harris has been riding for 38 years and professionally training horses for film, television and the sport of showjumping for the last 30 years. She has represented Australia as a showjumping rider at the World Cup Final in 1997, and again at the World Championships in 1998 on the thoroughbred Mr Popeye. Krissy is adept at promoting and producing shows.

Heath Harris has horse-mastered, trained, stunt co-ordinated and second unit directed over 40 feature films and approximately 120 commercials and television series. This includes "The Man From Snowy River", "Phar Lap" and "Racing Stripes". In all his movie and live show work his favourite horse is the thoroughbred. Krissy and Heath live at Mount White and together they are developing "Stonewall", a new equestrian complex on the Central Coast.

Nicole Poetsch has been involved with horses since childhood. Her family's involvement with breeding and racehorse ownership has been long and varied.

Nicole and her TB Sky Blitz competing in the Amateur Competitions Sydney Royal Easter Show 2015Ranging from her Grandfather's champion outback jockey status to her uncle training horses for bush races in NWQ – Nicole's family has also bred NSW country winners and enjoyed syndicate ownership. Nicole has extensive customer service, administration and events management skills.

Eye Surgeon Dr Karin Attebo and her husband, Spine Surgeon Dr Andrew Cree are very involved with the welfare of thoroughbreds. They are members of the ATC and current part owners of 23 pampered thoroughbreds. They want to assure a better future for all retired racehorses, by providing them with a new career and purpose beyond racing.

TSHA are looking for sponsorship on thoroughbred classes going forward at the events listed below, so interested studs and race clubs can contact Krissy Harris, krissyharris@outlook.comor ph: 0459 168 782 to support this highly worthwhile venture.

A nine year-old gelding by Starcraft, he will be ridden in the series by junior rider Jack Haynes.
