Demand for Quality Mares Bolsters Strong Karaka May

Media Release - Tuesday May 8

A strong finish on Day 2 of the 2018 Karaka May Sale  with a run of quality broodmares, posted figures to increase on the aggregate, average and median results seen at the Sale last year.

The aggregate closed at $5,333,100, the average reached $15,458 (up 6% from 2017) and the median rose to $8,000 from last year's $5,000.

"There was strong demand for broodmares, particularly those in foal to freshman sires, which countered the softening of the pinhook market seen on the first day of selling," NZB's Sales Manager Danny Rolston commented.

The Broodmare session reached an aggregate of $1,889,000 for 106 lots sold (79% clearance), with the average price paid $17,821. International buyers were keen to invest into the breeding lines on offer today, yet it was a well-known local that trumped the competition to secure the top priced broodmare (Lot 468) at $150,000.

The new owners of Cambridge Stud, Brendan and Jo Lindsay, consigned Passion Cut who is in foal to their resident sire Tavistock – though the Stud's previous owner, Sir Patrick Hogan, purchased the broodmare from the great Eight Carat family.

"I'm pretty passionate about the [Eight Carat] family," commend Sir Patrick. "I've had a bit of luck with it, and done well with it, so I'm very happy to be able to buy her back.

Mongolian Beauty"Depending on whether her foal is a colt, it will likely head back to Karaka at some time."

The second-highest-priced broodmare went to the bid of Haunui Farm who outlaid $130,000 for Brighthill Farm's well-bred mare Firostefani (Stratum) (Lot 415).

Andrew Williams Bloodstock was an active buyer over both days of selling and purchased several standout lots.

Setting the top price of the Sale, Williams was determined to acquire Curraghmore's smart Fastnet Rock filly, Mongolian Beauty (Lot 371), and bid to $180,000 for the sister to Group Two-winner Mongolian Falcon.

"I thought she was absolutely fantastic physically," commented Williams. "She was the one I came over for."

Williams was quick to secure the second-highest-priced weanling – Brighthill Farm's Pride of Dubai colt (Lot 146), out of Group Two-winner Equiparada (Editor's Note), for $140,000.

Day 2 concluded the Weanling Session which saw a strengthened clearance rate (82%) for the final weanlings offered.

Last year's leading vendor, Dan Myers was amongst the action offering his entire foal crop. His draft provided two of the highlight lots with a Written Tycoon colt (Lot 190) topping the Weanling session at $170,000, and a son of Press Statement (Lot 89) fetching $85,000 from Carlaw Park.

Hallmark Stud secured the Written Tycoon colt who will head to their farm to be prepared for the yearling sales with Mark Baker commenting, "He's just a good, strong and correct moving horse – one of the better colts at the Sale."

At the close of the Weanling session, 202 lots were traded for an aggregate of $2,713,100, with the clearance rate settling at 77%.

Inner Mongolia Rider Horse Industry topped the buying bench over the two-day Sale and accounted for the purchase of 20 lots spending $447,200 in total.

"Previously we were purchasing horses and shipping them back to China to race, but now we have expanded our business in New Zealand," commented Principal Mr Lang Lin.

"We are racing horses here now and are looking to expand our breeding business too."

Curraghmore featured frequently with several significant lots and have ended the Sale at the top of the leaderboard for leading vendors by aggregate. Selling 20 lots for $772,500 in total receipts, the successful nursery consigned the two top-priced yearlings on Day 1 withLot 64selling to Champion Thoroughbreds for $120,000 andLot 36selling to Te Akau Racing's David Ellis for $110,000.

Te Akau Stud were crowned the leading vendor by average (with three or more sold) when they offered and sold their entire draft of broodmares. Buyers paid an average of $47,667 for the Stud's catalogued lots, including their broodmare served by Iffraaj (Lot 440) who fetched $95,000 from Bruce Perry Bloodstock.

Waikato Stud's leading sire Savabeel has finished as the leading sire by average (with three or more sold) with three lots reaching an average of $68,333, including the second-highest-priced yearling (Lot 36). Stratum and Zabeel rounded out the top three with five of Stratum's progeny selling for an average of $40,800 and six of Zabeel's offspring fetching $30,417 on average.

Windsor Park Stud's first season sire Mongolian Kahn also featured in the leading sires table.
