First Winner for Fiorente

Tara Madgwick - Tuesday March 20
Sun Stud's Melbourne Cup hero Fiorente (IRE) has broken the ice with his first winner after Hawkshot won on debut at Ballarat on Tuesday.

FiorenteThe Darren Weir trained colt was sent out favourite for the 1200 metre juvenile maiden and did a good job to run down Written Tycoon colt Rock Tycoon to score a head win.

A buoyant winning trainer Darren Weir said after the race: "I’m really happy with the win, he’s just such a lovely big type of horse, with a great attitude and good action,” Darren Weir points out.

"He’s always been good in his work and everything we’ve done with him … it was great to see him emulate that today on debut.

"I’ve got three or four FIORENTE’s and they are all the same.

"I think the stallion is doing the job.

"It’s pretty hard to say where horses end up, but all the signs are good at the moment and I think he’s got a very bright future for sure.”

SUN STUD's regular jockey Mark Zahra, returned to scale just as upbeat. ,

"He really knuckled down late ... he’s a big tall horse who should come back a lovely 3YO,” Mark Zahra adds.

Bred and retained to race by Sun Stud, Hawkshot is the first winner for Rosa Perlato, an Encosta de Lago grand-daughter of Group I winner Shindig from the family of Group I winner Shinzig.

Rosa Perlato has a yearling colt also by Fiorente and had a filly by another of the young Sun Stud sires in Ready for Victory last year. She is now in foal to Sun Stud's dual Group I winner Palentino.

Hawkshot is the first winner for Fiorente, who has had just four starters and has also sired the metro placed Templar, who shows considerable promise in the Michelle Payne stable.

FIORENTE, a sire son of the all-conquering MONSUN, has had yearlings sell up to $200,000 from his first crop.

FIORENTE will line up for his fifth covering season in 2018 and is a stallion who offers diverse value for breeders in Victoria and throughout Australia and is a must for breeders looking for that little bit of X-Factor.
