One to Watch – Wyong

Tara Madgwick - Sunday November 10

With so much stakes racing on Saturday it’s hard to keep an eye on everything, but this maiden winner at Wyong on Saturday was an eye-catcher for both her pedigree and ability with more wins to come for the talented daughter of Pierro.

A $60,000 Super Maiden (1200m) at Wyong was chosen as the starting point for the John O’Shea and Tom Charlton trained filly Candlewick (3f Pierro x Pinocchio, by Encosta de Lago) and she duly obliged with a comprehensive win.

Sent out favourite after showing good ability in her three previous trials, she gave Andrew Adkins and easy steer, settling off the pace and then powering to the line to win by two and a half lengths.

Candlewick is a homebred for Tyreel Stud and is a half-sister to Everest winner Classique Legend and HK Group II winner Aethero being the fifth winner from five foals to race from top producer Pinocchio, a full sister to Champion Miler and five time Group I winner Racing to Win.

Candlewick was born at Tyreel Stud in 2021, pictured with her dam Pinocchio.

Tyreel Stud have had some sensational sales results with the progeny of Pinocchio selling yearlings from blue-blood mare for $1.1million and $2million, but elected to part company with her earlier this year selling the gorgeous grey for $1.15million at the Inglis Chairman’s Sale to Bromfield Park / Group 1 Bloodstock.

Pinocchio sold for $1.115 million at the Inglis Chairman's Sale this year.

She was in foal to I Am Invincible and produced a filly from that mating on October 28 for her new owners.

Tyreel Stud also still have a yearling filly by I Am Invincible from Pinocchio that promises to be a sales star in 2025.
