Sister to Group One Contender for Karaka

Media Release - Friday January 5
Stakes-winning filly Xpression has begun her build-up toward one of the most prized two-year-old titles.

Xpression - Race ImagesThe daughter of Showcasing has made an excellent start to her career with the Gr.1 Courtesy Ford Manawatu Sires' Produce Stakes (1400m) at Awapuni on March 31 her autumn goal.

"She did well during a short break and we're planning to take her to Wairoa," said Grant Cullen, who trains with Guy Lowry.

"There's a nice race on the last day to kick her off in and usually the track there never gets too firm.

"There's also a lead-up race at Trentham two weeks before the Sires' Produce if we think she's going to need another run.

Xpression, whose yearling sister (Lot 1077) will be offered by Nala Park during the Book 2 Sale at Karaka in February, ran third on debut last month before she inflicted a first defeat on Espumoso when she won the Gr.2 Wakefield Challenge Stakes (1200m) eight days later.

"She's an intelligent filly and she improved a lot after her first run, it was always the plan to back her up," Cullen said.

Meanwhile, Xpression's Group One-winning stablemate Wait A Sec will resume in Saturday week's Gr.3 Tui – Backing Winners Since 1889 Anniversary (1600m) at Trentham.

"Jason Waddell will ride him with Johnathan Parkes suspended," Cullen said.

"Then he'll run in the Taranaki Cup over 1800m and he's nominated for the Herbie Dyke Stakes or the Wairoa Cup is an option. His main aim is the Auckland Cup."

Wait A Sec was an upset winner of the Gr.1 Livamol Classic (2040m) two runs back and was given a break after he finished eighth in the Gr.3 OMF Stakes (2000m) at Ellerslie where he got a long way back on a track that favoured on pace runners.

"We weren't disappointed at all. His sectionals were actually quicker than he ran in the Livamol," Cullen said. – NZ Racing Desk.
