One to Watch – Sunshine Coast

Tara Madgwick - Sunday May 19

A $50,000 juvenile event over 1400m at the Sunshine Coast on Sunday drew a very competitive big field of 14 and the dominant winner was a son of Doncaster winner Brutal.

Trained by Kris Lees and ridden by Craig Williams, Brutal Bowler was sent out favourite after a debut sixth at Eagle Fam last month over 1200m and appreciated the step up in trip to power clear and win by nearly three lengths beating Wowzino (Tarzino) and Italian Dancer (Dundeel).

Brutal Bowler was a $240,000 Magic Millions purchase from Newhaven Park for Lees Racing/Bahen Bloodstock and is entered for the Group I BRC JJ Atkins (1600m) next month as are the two juveniles he defeated, so it could be quite a good form race.

Brutal Bowler was a $240,000 Magic Millions purchase.

He is the third winner from three foals to race from stakes-placed Fastnet Rock mare Refer, a grand-daughter of stakes-winner Lady of Persia from the family of Group I winners Cheeky Choice, Zabrasive and Gypsy Goddess.

Brutal Bowler is the sixth winner for O’Reilly’s brilliant sprinter miler Brutal, whose fee has been set at Newgate this spring at $16,500.
