Ambitious Goals for Russian Revolution's The Gambling Greek

Mark Smith - Wednesday May 8

A heavy track proved no impediment for the highly regarded Russian Revolution debutant The Gambling Greek in the Cascade Maiden Hcp (1200m) at Eagle Farm on Wednesday.

Ridden by Angela Jones for Tony and Maddysen Sears, The Gambling Greek made every post a winner in defeating the favourite Provance (Star Witness) by a long-neck, with Italian Dancer (Dundeel) running on strongly for third.

Maddysen Sears revealed that they were hoping to debut The Gambling Greek in the opening race over 1000m where he was the fifth emergency.

“We would have liked to start him in the 1000m where we thought he would win very easily,” Sears confided.

“He is a bit of a tricky horse, and we have played around with a lot of gear, and this is what works for him.

“We own him with Craig Black, Harvey and his grandsons. We bought him in New Zealand with Paul Moroney and  Catheryne Bruggeman last year.

“We see him as a potential Sires horse. He is nominated for the (BRC) Sires and JJ (Atkins Stakes), so we will see how he pulls up.

“He is a cool horse to do anything with and is very quiet. He felt the pinch at the finish on a heavy track, but he dug deep, so we are really happy.”

The Golden Greek a $200,000 Karaka yearling

A $130,000 pinhook for Highline Thoroughbreds Ltd / Catheryne Bruggeman / Paul Moroney from the Yarran Thoroughbreds draft at the 2022 Inglis Great Southern Weanling Sale, the handsome son of Russian Revolution sold for $200,000 when consigned by Highline Thoroughbreds to the NZB Karaka Book 1 Yearling Sale.

The Gambling Greek is the fifth winner from seven to race from the smart racemare Delta Girl.

The daughter of General Nediym won the Listed Widden Stakes and was third in the Group II Magic Night Stakes.

From the Waikato Stud family that has produced I Wish I Win and Strike The Stars, Delta Girl was sold for $50,000 on Inglis Digital in 2022.

Her Blue Point (IRE) colt was a $40,000 purchase for Monarch Bloodstock when consigned by Twin Hills Stud to the 2024 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale.

Delta Girl visited In The Congo last spring, having not been covered in 2022.
