Sirileo Miss Bounces Back in Matron Stakes

Mark Smith - Saturday March 11

Sirileo Miss bounced back from a disappointing performance in the Frances Tressady Stakes to make a one-act affair of the $200,000 Group III Matron Stakes (1600m) at Flemington on Saturday.

Ridden by Ben Melham for Symon Wilde, the daughter of Pride Of Dubai led from the front and was going strong to the line to defeat Excelida (Exceed And Excel) by three and three-quarter lengths with a long neck back to Barb Raider (Rebel Raider) in third.

With her third Group III success, Sirileo Miss advances her record to eight wins, three seconds, and three thirds from 23 starts with earnings of $735,800.

Racing manager Ben Casanelia noted the 5yo mare has an exemplary second-up record.

“She’s four from six (second up) now,” Casanelia said.

“We were probably a little bit disappointed with her first-up (because) she’d trialled well and her work had been good.

“Today, gate one, and Ben rode her well.

“We were concerned about her record at Flemington, I think she was zip from six goes here, but today she’s done that easily.

“At the top of the straight, I knew she was travelling, and she does need to be ridden along a little bit, but there was plenty of horse there, and she was fantastic. All credit to her.

“I think we were planning on going to the Sunline (Stakes), but I’ll leave that to Symon and the team at home to the team to decide that, but the owners will enjoy today, and she’s a real marvel for the stable.”

A $60,000 purchase by Wilde Racing from the Miranda Park draft at the 2019 Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale, Sirileo Miss is a half-sister to stakes-placed Sophia's Choice (Fastnet Rock).

Bred by Gary O’Meara, Sirileo Miss is the best of seven winners from eight to race out of the winning Galileo mare She’s Sirius.

Purchased by Miranda Park Bloodstock for $75,000 at the 2017 Inglis Australian Broodmare Sale, She’s Sirius is a half-sister to Listed VRC Ottawa Stakes winner Spectrolite.

She’s Sirius foaled a filly by King’s Legacy last spring and was covered by Hanseatic.

Blue Light Enhances Breeding Success
For successful breeding outcomes, timing is everything. The horse’s natural reproductive period coincides with the light-filled days of summer. As seasonal breeders, the naturally lengthening days of spring suppress melatonin and in turn stimulate reproductive hormones that maximise fertility for both mares and stallions.
