A Group 1 Winner for Rubick as Jacquinot Puts Them to the Sword in Golden Rose

Mark Smith - Saturday September 24

Outstanding Rubick colt Jacquinot defied the pattern of the day when he charged home from well back in the field to claim the $1,000,000 Group 1 Chandon Golden Rose Stakes.

Ridden by Damian Lane for Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr, Jacquinot defeated the favoured I Am Invincible filly In Secret by a half-neck with the Zoustar colt Zou Tiger one and a quarter length back in third.

Often his own worse enemy last season at two, Jacquinot was coming off a dominant win over the Caulfield Guineas favourite Aft Cabin in the H.D.F McNeil Stakes at Caulfield.

A luckless third in the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes, Jacqinot again found trouble when sixth in the Golden Slipper. His record advances to three wins and a third from six starts with earnings of $1,058,050.

Michael Kent Jnr said the Caulfield Guineas is the aim if Jacquinot pulls up well.

uo;Fantastic, what a win; they don’t usually do that,” Kent enthused.

“The speed was on, and they kept flowing, and the important thing was the horse broke well and got into a winning position, and he really let down well.”

“As a two-year-old, he was always the horse that would be improved the most. He was awesome first up, and a real set play by Mick [Price] and the team to come here second up with a trial, keep the speed in his legs, he’s not a robust horse, I’m just delighted, it’s fantastic."

Kent said everything was against Jacquinot in the Golden Slipper.

“Heavy track, the blinkers were on which fired him a little bit and he was just too immature, we’ve got a much more robust horse these days,” he said.

“The plan before today was to go two weeks into the Caulfield Guineas, we’ve ticked the Group 1 box so now we’ll just work out if that’s the right thing for the horse. He’ll be back on the truck tomorrow and we’ll take a look at him at Cranbourne and make a call.”

Jacquinot failed to make his $120,000 reserve at the Gold Coast

Damian Lane said Jacquinot left his rivals without an excuse.

“The horse was great today. He just keeps improving. He spotted the leaders a big start, so he did great to sprint home there to win,” he said.

Foaled and raised at Coolmore, Jacquinot is raced by his breeder Lindsay Maxsted and partners after being passed in short of his $120,000 reserve at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

He is the first foal of the unraced Pierro mare Ponterro a sister to Group II ARC Avondale Guineas and Group II Auckland Guineas winner Dragon Leap, and a half-sister to Cornwall Park Stud’s Group 1 ATC Rosehill Guineas winner Inference (So You Think), and the dual Listed winner Illation (So You Think).

After missing in 2019, Ponterro’s Yes Yes Yes colt died after birth last spring. She was covered by Wootton Bassett (GB).

Jacquinot is the first Group 1 winner for Rubick. The sire of The Everest winner and popular young Coolmore stallion Yes Yes Yes, Rubick began his stud career at Coolmore and now stands at Swettenham Stud for $22,000.

He is also the first Group I winner for Pierro as a broodmare sire.
