Calypso Reign Romps in Spring Stakes

Mark Smith - Saturday August 13

Grand Syndicates could not make it three consecutive wins in the Group III Grand Syndicates Spring Stakes at Morphettville with their triple Group 1 winner Behemoth, but it was the stable’s second stringer Calypso Reign who got the job done in style.

It was a horror outing for Behemoth, who missed the start and raced flat.

In contrast, Calypso Reign, a 6yo son of Barbados, charged down the centre of the track under Kayla Crowther to defeat Pindaric (Fastnet Rock) by two and a quarter lengths with  Pimm's Party (Street Boss) a neck back in third.

It was the first stakes win for the David Jolly-trained gelding advancing his record to eight wins, four seconds, and two thirds from 6 starts with earnings of $414,760.

Calypso Reign has been in rare form with four wins and a second from his last five starts.

A $17,000 purchase for Grand Syndicates/David Jolly from the Ducatoon Park draft at the 2018 Magic Millions Adelaide Yearling Sale, Calypso Reign is a half-brother to the Listed Tasmanian Oaks winner La Fantastique (Fantastic Light).

They are two of the seven winners from nine to race out of the stakes-placed Bluebird (US) mare Rainbird Blue who died in 2017.

The Spring Stakes winner is her final foal.

Calypso Reign is the second stakes-winner for Ducatoon Park’s superbly bred Redoute’s Choice stallion Barbados.
