Allowed to find his feet from a wide gate by Will Price, Thron Bone spent the majority of the race wide without cover but looked to have plenty to offer before the home turn and ultimately sustained a powerful finish to win comfortably.

Winning trained Jerome Hunter revealed after the race that he had sent the two-year-old to the spelling paddock after his previous win to prepare for a tilt at the Group Three Vain Stakes but had a change of heart due to the horse thriving.

“We put him out and were going to go to the Vain Stakes but he was doing so well out I thought why stop while we’re going good.

“It’s six weeks between runs so we thought we’d bring him here just to keep him ticking over. He’s still got another three weeks.”

“Caulfield 1200 suited him down to the ground. He was too good today,” said Price.

“He’s going to go on to bigger and better things.”

A $200,000 purchase for Rich River Meat Exports Pty Ltd from the Sun Stud draft at the Inglis Melbourne Premer Yearling Sale, Thron Bone carries the colours of Graeme Gathercole’s Graebar Park.
