An Oaks on the Radar for Veandechance

Mark Smith - Wednesday May 25

Trainer Matthew Dunn believes Veandechance will be an Oaks contender next season after the daughter of Vancouver ploughed through the mud to break her maiden over 1250m at Canterbury on Wednesday.

Given a positive ride by Nash Rawiller, Veandechance hit the line strongly to defeat the Sebring filly Twelve Hours by a half-length, with the Press Statement filly Better Judgement ma head back in third.

Veandechance was well-supported following a promising debut third at Canterbury on May 4.

“The most exciting part is that she is not furnished yet,” Dunn said.

“She has lots of improvement. She slogged through the ground OK today. I don’t know if she enjoyed it completely, she took a while to get through her gears, but her attitude and willingness will take her a long way.

“She does not lack for size, and once she strengthens, look out.

‘We bought her as an Oaks filly. Hopefully, she will stretch out – she has the right attitude and action to get those distances and has the right pedigree, so fingers crossed.”

Bought by Matthew by Dunn/Neil Jenkinson for $120,000 from the Westbury Stud draft at the 2021 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, Veandechance is the second winner from three to race out of the Sydney winning Red Ransom (USA) mare Roll The Bones.

Stakes-placed in the Listed ATC Reginald Allen Hcp, Roll The Bones is a half-sister to stakes-winner Rasmussen out of a sister to Melbourne Cup heroine Jezabeel (Zabeel).

Purchased by Baramul Stud for $160,000 off Patinack Farm in 2013, Roll The Bones has missed in three of her first seven seasons and had a dead Snitzel foal in another. She was covered by Bivouac last spring.

Golden Slipper winner Vancouver stands at Woodside Park Stud in 2022 for a fee of $15,400.
