Annabel Neasham has had a great run with her two year-olds this season and saddled another winner at Newcastle on Thursday with a debut success for a very flashy son of Not a Single Doubt.
Placed in his two previous trials, West of Africa enjoyed a good run in transit under James McDonald and looked set to win the 1200m maiden until bumped hard by Ferrari Man in the concluding stages to be beaten a nose.
Stewards thought the baldy faced chestnut was hard done by and awarded him the race on protest.
A $340,000 Magic Millions purchase for Tony Fung Investments/Phoenix Thoroughbreds from the Edinburgh Park draft, West of Africa was bred by Ian Smith and is the first foal of Group II placed Sebring mare Serena Bay, who was also bred by Smith.
Edinburgh Park sold the second foal from Serena Bay, a filly by Exceed and Excel, at Magic Millions this year to Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott/Kestrel Thoroughbreds and the mare has a filly to follow by Written Tycoon.
She was covered last year by Snitzel.
