Chris Waller won the Group III Carbine Club Stakes (1600m) with subsequent Group 1 winners Kermadec and Comin’ Through and he has another on an upward trajectory in the filly Fangirl.
Backed to the exclusion of all others, the daughter of Sebring was making just her fifth start. She broke her maiden at Goulburn on September 25 before overcoming difficulties to win the Listed ATC Reginald Allen Quality at Randwick at her most recent start on October 16.
Settled towards the back of the field by James McDonald, Fangirl exploded down the centre of the track to defeat the Astern colt Brigantine by three lengths with the Press Statement colt Daily Bugle aa further one and a half-lengths back in third.
A homebred for the Ingham family, Fangirl advances her record to three wins and a third from five starts with earnings of $424,665.
“She’s very well educated. She knows what she’s doing and that was spectacular win,” McDonald said.
“She’s very smart and is a work in progress. I could say that she should be almost unbeaten. She had no luck early doors and is reaping the rewards.
“No doubt she’s a filly on the rise, and I’m sure she’ll be figuring in all of those Group 1 races.”
Stable representative Jo Taylor said Derby Day has been a rich hunting ground in recent years.
“This has always been quite a good day for us, thankfully, and it is always a good way to kick off like this,” Taylor said.
“James knows these horses so well. He bided his time at the back and gave her an easy time. She was certainly dominant once he called upon her and put them to bed quite quickly.”
Fangirl is the best of four winners from six to race out of the Encosta de Lago mare Little Surfer Girl. Like her daughter, Little Surfer Girl won the Listed Reginald Allen Quality Handicap in addition to the Listed ATC Angst Quality Handicap and Listed Civic Stakes.
Bob Ingham purchased Little Surfer Girl for $1,500,000 from the Coolmore Stud draft at the 2008 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale.
She was the lone stakes-winner for the VRC Oaks, MRC One Thousand Guineas and STC Arrowfield Stud Stakes winner Special Harmony (Spinning World).
Little Surfer Girl has a yearling colt by Pariah but missed last season.
