Record Breaking Too Darn Hot Brother Stays Undefeated

Tara Madgwick - Friday July 24

Australian breeders have the opportunity this spring to send mares to the European Champion 2YO and 3YO Colt of 2018, 2019 in Too Darn Hot (GB), whose expensive full brother made it two wins in as many starts at Newmarket in the UK on Friday.

Trained by John Gosden, three year-old Dubawi colt Darain won on debut at Newbury on July 8 and kept up the good work scoring a two and a quarter length win in the 1m2f novice stakes as a hot favourite.

“Darain got a bump and was a little lit up early on as it was a steady pace. He finished off his race well and is a progressive type,” said John Gosden.

A 3.5million guinea purchase from the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale, Darain topped that sale and was the most expensive yearling sold anywhere in the world in 2018.

He runs for Qatar Racing and his breeders Watership Downs Stud and is the fifth winner from six foals to race from Champion Older Mare and triple Group I winner Dar Re Mi.

Triple Group I winner Too Darn Hot is the jewel in the crown for Dar Re Mi, but she is also the dam of Group II winner Lah Ti Dar and Group III winner So Mi Dar, all three sired by Dubawi.

While most of this family are middle distance range performers, Too Darn Hot had a lot more brilliance and won all of his races – four of them as a juvenile – from 1400 and 1600m.

Too Darn Hot stands at Darley NSW a fee of $44,000.
