First Season Sires Shine at Karaka Book 2 Second Session

Media Release - Thursday January 30

The strong demand for New Zealand-based first season sires continued into the second day of Book 2 at New Zealand Bloodstock’s 94th National Yearling Sale Series, with kiwi stallions currently leading the sire charts.

Rich Hill Stud’s first season sire Vadamos is leading sire by average in Book 2 (three or more sold), with six horses sold at an average of $79,583 after two days of selling.

Another first season sire, Highview Stud’s Wrote also featured prominently throughout the day, with the second-highest average in Book 2 of $58,000 representing five horses sold.

Little Avondale Stud’s resident stallion Per Incanto followed closely behind in third place, averaging $55,278 for nine yearlings purchased from the first two days of selling.

$185,000 Vadamos colt from Silke TopToday’s highlight was purchased by Paul Moroney, with the international bloodstock agent going to $185,000 to secure Lot 859, the Vadamos colt out of Silke Top from the draft of Valachi Downs.

“Vadamos is an internationally bred and performed horse,” Moroney said. “He’s top-class from a Monsun line, which I am a great fan of. They have been really good types.

“I rated this horse as the best mover I saw on the sales ground, of any sale, across the board,” commented Moroney.

The second top Lot was secured by Upper Bloodstock, who purchased Beckam Equine’s only yearling in the Sale, Lot 963 a Proisir colt out of Works Wonders for $180,000.

The buying bench was again led by Australian agent John Foote, who so far has purchased four horses for a total spend of $360,000.

Sam and Libby Bleakley’s Highden Park currently lead the vendor by average title representing $95,750 for four horses sold. Sellers of multiple Group One-winning Book 2 graduate Beauty Generation displayed their quality draft today with three of their Lots selling for $100,000 or more.

Leading vendor by aggregate is currently headed by Highview Stud, selling 16 horses for $732,000 in receipts.

The average has climbed from Day One of Book 2, settling at $37,353 with the turnover reaching a total of $7,993,500.

In a new sales format, the third and final day of Book 2 will commence Friday morning at 11am with Lot 1041 to 1150 going under the hammer.

Following the conclusion of Book 2, Book 3 will commence directly after selling with Lots 1151 to 1265 going through the ring on Friday afternoon.

All horses purchased at Karaka this week are eligible for the lucrative Karaka Million Series with two $1 million races available for graduates as two and three-year-olds, plus the $100,000 CollinsonForex Karaka Cup for the duration of their career. Nominations must be received by 5pm Tuesday 3 March 2020.
