First Winner for Headwater

Mark Smith - Saturday January 4

The glorious looking chestnut Wisdom Of Water credited his sire Headwater with his first winner when successful in Saturday’s $125,000 Aquis Gold Nugget Quality at the Gold Coast and will return to the same track in seven days as a winning chance in the $2 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic.

Completing a sweep of the two-year-old features for Toby and Trent Edmonds, Wisdom Of Water defeated Godolphin’s $625,000 Brazen Beau colt Conceited by three-quarters of a length with the $2,000 Unencumbered colt The Drink’s Cart a head back in third.Headwater's Wisdom Of Water breaks through at the Gold Coast - Racing QLD

Wisdom Of Water was the ‘talking horse’ from the barrier trials following two trial wins by five lengths and seven lengths.

He went out an odd-on favourite at his race debut at Eagle Farm but disappointed when a well-beaten fourth. But Robbie Fraad said the strapping chestnut is a quirky horse.

“The last time at Eagle Farm I think we put him on the bunny too quick. He is a much better horse ridden quietly. He’s a bit crazy but boy he can run. I was trying to hold him for the sprint and as soon as I let go he went bang and we were up there far too early,” Fraad said.

Toby Edmonds said it had been a battle against time to qualify him for the Magic Millions.

“It’s a great effort by the colt he’s been on a really thin timeline to get here, he only got three weeks in the paddock and three weeks back to a trial before we brought him back here,” Edmonds said.Headwater

“He’s doing it all on ability, he’s very naughty, he’s a colt and knows he’s a colt, just strong enough to try and put it over on you.

“He’s very green and will take a stack of improvement out of that run, if he can draw well he’s a good chance next week.”

A $70,000 purchase by Blandford Bloodstock out of the Eureka Stud draft at the 2019 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, Wisdom Of Water is the third foal and third winner out of the winning Royal Academy (USA) mare Regal Tier who is a half-sister to eight winners including the dual Listed winner Tierquillo and the stakes-placed Eminence Grise and to the dam of the Listed Glasshouse Stakes winner Flamboyer.

Regal Tier has a colt foal by Headwater and was covered last spring by Encryption last spring.

Standing at Vinery Stud at a fee of $16,500, Headwater has six catalogued for the Magic Millions, 21 in the Inglis Classic and six in the Inglis Premier
