Sunshine Coast trainer David Vandyke had a good day at the office at Doomben on Saturday, winning the opening race with the debutant Red Stiletto before closing out the programme with a maiden stake success with the 4-year-old Spirit Of Boom mare Frangipani Moon in the Listed Just Now Stakes (1350m).
Given a rails-hugging ride by Jake Bayliss, Frangipani Moon defeated Shalwa (O'Reilly) by a half-length with Mewstone Rock (Fastnet Rock) one and a quarter length back in third.
Bred by Plaintree Farm’s David and Heather Pascoe, Frangipani Moon advances her record to 3 wins, 2 seconds and 3 thirds from 11 starts with earnings of $131,150.
"Heather and David are great clients and supporters. They own just about the whole family of Frangipani Moon and to get black-type for them is a great thrill," Vandyke said.
"I wasn't overconfident today but Jake told me he thought she could win. Jake was going to be a hero or a villain with his rails ride but it has worked out well.
"Frangipani Moon is not a Magic Millions horse but there are plenty more fillies and mares race for her.
"She is a funny horse who need things to go right but she can win again.
Frangipani Moon is the first foal out of the winning Conatus mare Equality who was also bred by Plaintree. Equality’s dam Miss Yuen Yuen (Royal Academy) is a half-sister to the dual Listed stakes-winner Transporter (Commands).
Equality has been courted by Spirit Of Boom in all five seasons at stud. She has a 2yo filly by the Eureka Stud phenomenon and is due to foal to him again this year.
Frangipani Moon becomes the 11th stakes-winner for Spirit Of Boom who has 11 years heading to the Magic Millions and six catalogued for the Inglis Classic Yearling Sale.
