Expensive California Blueblood Salutes

Tara Madgwick - Wednesday October 16
Hong Kong based owner Howard Liang has already had a good result this week from an expensive Inglis Easter purchase in California Zimbol, winner of the Group III MRC Thoroughbred Club Stakes, and he may soon enjoy stakes success with another after superbly bred Fastnet Rock filly California Salto resumed from a spell to win at Newcastle on Tuesday.

California Salto as a yearlingTrained by Peter and Paul Snowden, California Salto went for a spell after breaking her maiden at Warwick Farm by three lengths back in June and returned in winning form to beat older horses by a neck over 1300 metres as a hot favourite.

An $800,000 Inglis Easter purchase for Asian Bloodstock Services from the Segenhoe Stud draft, California Salto was bred by Fairway Thoroughbreds and is the first foal of Comaneci a winning High Chaparral (IRE) half-sister to Group I champions Elvstroem and Haradasun as well as Group I placed Hveger, the dam of another Group I champion in Highland Reel (IRE) as well as Last Saturday's Group I MRC Caulfield Stakes winner Cape of Good Hope (IRE).

Segenhoe sold a Redoute's Choice colt from Comaneci at Inglis Easter this year for $450,000 and she has foaled this spring producing this colt pictured below at Segenhoe by Fastnet Rock that is a full brother to California Salto.

Born in 2011, Comaneci is the last filly produced by Australian Oaks winner and blue hen Circles of Gold, so it's hard not to think she'll be making a big impression at stud in years to come.
