New 2YO Star for Exceed and Excel

Tara Madgwick - Friday August 25
Darley flagship sire Exceed and Excel has another juvenile star on the rise with exciting filly Threading remaining unbeaten to win the Group II Lowther Stakes at York overnight.

A homebred for Darley trained by Mark Johnston, Threading won by six lengths on debut at the start of the month at Goodwood and went right on with it in this tougher six furlong contest.

She powered clear for James Doyle to win by a length and three-quarters in a dominant display.

"You start thinking of the Cheveley Park (Group I) but we haven't really discussed it. Threading won on soft ground at Goodwood and she's won on soft ground again. A lot of people think that Exceed And Excels almost invariably need fast ground - I think it would be wrong to pigeonhole her as needing soft ground and it would be very interesting to see her on a sounder surface and see how she goes," said Mark Johnston.

"You'd say there that she could be a Guineas filly. She stayed the trip very well and started to pull away right at the death. The Guineas will be on our minds but this has been very quick since Goodwood, it's only six days ago that we supplemented."

Exceed and ExcelThreading is the third winner of the Group II York Lowther Stakes for her champion sire Exceed and Excel, joining Best Terms and Infamous Angel.

She is the best of four winners from Chaquiras, an unraced full sister to champion racehorse Dubai Millennium, the sire of champion sire Dubawi.

Chaquiras is also a grand-daughter of phenomenal producer Fall Aspen, the dam of four Group I winners, so Threading is potentially a superstar broodmare for Darley in the future.

Threading is the 136th stakes-winner worldwide for Exceed and Excel, who stands at Darley this spring at a fee of $110,000.

His classy stakes-winning fillies Madeenaty and Jorda are acceptors on Saturday at Rosehill in the Group III ATC San Domenico Stakes.
