Top bets from Ben Dorries for Gold Coast Saturday

Ben Dorries - Friday August 25

I've been in the doldrums with my tips recently but the Gold Coast has always been a happy hunting ground and I'll be attacking it with gusto.

Our man Ben Dorries will be smoking a fat cigar and counting his cash after the Gold Coast this Saturday

SONY LEGEND (Gold Coast Race 2 No 4)
Any danger this guy could get some luck?! Going back through the videos of his recent runs is a catalogue of horrors. He is a horse who needs things to go his way but I'm convinced he is going really well. He should get the luck he has been craving here as will be allowed to drop back off a fast past and be taken to the outside and be surging home. They will go helter-skelter in the early stages and he will be out of the firing line and being cuddled up for a final shot at overpowering them. You would think he would be more suited over a bit longer but I am now actually thinking the opposite – a fast run 1100m dash will suit him down to the ground.

OUTRAGED (Gold Coast Race 4 No 4)
Last year's Townsville Cup winner just seems to be getting better with age. Is absolutely bursting to win after two tremendous efforts returning from a break when just beaten over 1350m and 1600m. If his effort at Doomben on August 19 – when he stormed home from last to only just go down – wasn't the run of a coming winner then I'll give it away. Appeared to have a lapful of horse still left on the line that day and the step up to 1800m now is ideal. Love the fact he gets 1.5kg off his back, thanks to Tiff Brooker, and he will be the strongest on the line. Happy to take on the favourite Mr Epic who I tipped last start and I think was a bit disappointing, even though admittedly perhaps not given the best ride that day.

ODDS $4.60 @ Sportsbet (Power Play), Ladbrokes (Odds Boost)

WHYPEEO (Gold Coast Race 7 No 6)
Nothing went right for this Toby Edmonds sprinter last time when missed the kick, over-raced and was checked several times. Was a good run considering. Strongly suspect Jeff Lloyd will be desperate to get to the front here, like he did when Whypeeo blew them away in his first start at Ballina. There will be a bit of pace inside but even if he happens to miss the kick slightly, Lloyd can stay out of trouble from barrier nine and keep hunting to the front (or close to it). There is every chance Shogun Sun and Italia Bella will be the better prospects going forward, but Whypeeo looks to be the horse on this day for this race. The other favoured ones in the market are likely to be well back while Whypeeo can make use of his speed and give a mighty kick from up front. 1100m could be ideal for him while it's likely to be too short for a few others in the market here.
BET: WIN
ODDS $4.20 @ Sportsbet (Power Play), Ladbrokes (Odds Boost)
