Hong Kong Derby Winner for Pierro

Tara Madgwick - Monday March 18
The Asian market is an important one for any young stallion and Pierro's stocks have risen sky high after his talented son Furore raced to a dominant win in the HK$18 million BMW Hong Kong Derby (2000m) at Sha Tin on Sunday.

Bought for $210,000 at the 2016 NZB Premier Sale from the Haunui Farm draft by Australian Bloodstock/ Lees Racing, Furore began his career in Australia for the Kris Lees stable, where he won four of his six starts and was third in the Group I ATC Rosehill Guineas (2000m).

Furore returns a Derby hero - images Grant CourtneySold to Hong Kong last year after finishing sixth in the Group I ATC Australian Derby, Furore joined the stable of Frankie Lor and has obviously made a very successful transition to his new environment.

Drawn wide in the field of 14, Furore enjoyed a good run in transit for Hugh Bowman and hit the line hard to win the 2000 metre feature by a length and a quarter, his sixth win from just 11 starts.

"Although Furore drew poorly, I was confident he could do the job if I could get him in the right position," Bowman said.

"I had the stablemate (Mission Tycoon), the likely leader, drawn next to me (11); I thought I could at least go with him to start with and see where we end up. I was able to get a lovely run three pairs back."

Bowman is looking forward to continuing his association with Furore if the horse progresses to the Group I QEII Cup on Champions Day, April 28.

"I think back to when Werther won the Derby a few years ago and he went on to win the QEII at his next start," he said.

"I don't know what Frankie's plans are but you'd think it would be a logical step forward. Until he goes there and does it, it's hard to know (if he's good enough). He's certainly put the writing on the wall that he deserves his chance in open grade."

Furore's victory fulfilled Frankie Lor's dream of becoming the first "home grown" Hong Kong trainer to land the race for 11 years.

"I can't express my feelings," Lor said, after claiming Hong Kong's most prestigious local prize in only his second season with a trainers' licence.
Lor, 53, whose father was a mafoo, grew up in Happy Valley, Hong Kong racing's spiritual home. After 36 years advancing through the Hong Kong Jockey Club system as jockey, assistant and now trainer, he has an acute sense of what the 146-year-old feature means to the city's racing folk.

Furore as a yearling"To have one horse to even run in the Derby – now I've won the Derby, so it's a dream come true!" he said.

Bred by Jonathan Munz's GSA Bloodstock, Furore is a half-brother to Hong Kong Group III winner Blizzard and is from Stormy Choice, a three-quarter-sister by Redoute's Choice to Group I winner Danestorm.

She was sent to New Zealand to visit Munz's Group I VRC Australian Guineas winner Ferlax and has a three year-old filly, two year old filly and yearling filly by the ill-fated son of Pentire (GB).

She is now back in Australia and was covered by Written Tycoon last spring.

Furore is one of 15 stakes-winners sired by Golden Slipper winner Pierro, who was super popular at Coolmore last year covering 228 mares at a fee of $88,000.

Seven of his stakes-winners, including group I winners Levendi and Arcadia Queen, are from daughters of Redoute's Choice making it a highly potent cross. The statistics for this nick are 21 winners from 29 runners (72.4% winners to runners) with seven stakes-winners making for 24.1% stakes-winners to runners.
