The top bets from Clinton Payne for July 26

Clinton Payne - Wednesday July 26

Keen to get involved at Canterbury on Wednesday where I think I've found two worthy win bets at decent odds.

I think this is one of the better bets of the day in the final race at Canterbury on Wednesday. Photo: Bradley Photographers

BASTIA (Canterbury Race 6 No 1)
This race looks his chance to break back into the winner's list. Both runs this preparation have been solid is respectable midweek races. First-up in a benchmark 67 he ran second to the progressive Cosmic Engine before a career best second-up effort when third behind the inform gallopers Imperator Augustus and Quick Defence in a benchmark 72 at this track. This is a drop in grade on paper and he gives the impression he'll relish getting up to the 1900m trip. He won his only previous third-up run, should be able to secure the ideal on-pace run and Kerrin McEvoy goes as good as any in these middle distance staying types of races. He'll give us a big sight.

STATIC LIFT (Canterbury Race 7 No 4)
Handy performer resuming from a spell. Static Lift raced below my expectations last prep but he had a couple of tough runs early in the prep and looking back now being beaten 3-1/2 lengths by Bonny O'Reilly first-up wasn't that bad. Loved his trial at Randwick on July 10 when closing off strongly late for second to Washington Heights, which was impressive winning first-up. Others that finished behind him in the trial included proven Saturday or stakes class performers Rule The River, Zanbagh and Lunar Rise and he looked better than them. On Wednesday, he draws barrier four so should be afforded a good run and prior to the last campaign had strong fresh stats. Pretty keen to be with him here.
