So Si Bon a Stakes-Winner at Last

Tara Madgwick - Wednesday December 26
One of the most promising three year-olds from the first crop of champion racehorse So You Think, So Si Bon has never lacked for talent, but his race record only featured one win until Boxing Day when he powered to the line to win the Listed VRC Lord Stakes (1700m) at Caulfield to the great delight of his connections.

Group I placed in the ATC Rosehill Guineas and MRC Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes, So Si Bon has in recent times become better known for his bad behaviour rather than his ability.

So Si Bon - images Grant CourtneyTrained in the early part of his career by Robbie Laing, So Si Bon has been banned for biting rivals on three occasions and was gelded after being transferred to the Hayes Dabernig team at Lindsay Park in a bid to help his wayward manners.

"It's a miracle," said Ben Hayes.

"That's one of the bigger thrills I've had in a while.

"He is a teaser, he has teased his whole career.

"He ended up with the best run in the race, any other horse I would have been declaring him at the top of the straight.

"But when he hit the front so early I did hold my breath. It might give him a bit of confidence, he might win a couple in a row."

A $250,000 Inglis Easter purchase for his Robbie Laing for the Newgate Farm draft, So Si Bon was bred by Morning Rise Stud and has won two races and placed nine times from 31 starts earning over $470,000 in prizemoney.

He is one of two winners from former smart stakes winning juvenile Black Minx, who died in 2014.

So Si Bon is the 14th stakes-winner for So You Think, who has strong representation at upcoming sales and also had a smart winner at Randwick on Boxing Day in Cyber Intervention.
