Not a Single Doubt's Doubt Defying Claims Sale Cup

Mark Smith - Sunday October 28

After the half-brothers Doubt Defying and Group II Roman Consul Stakes winner Sesar won at Randwick back on October 6, Brisbane-based trainer Steve O'Dea continued his profitable southern with Doubt Defying earning his first stakes win in Sunday's $200,000 Listed Sale Cup (1600m).

Two year's older than his dual stakes-winning half-brother Doubt Defying has won four of his past five starts.

Settled back just worst than midfield by Michael Walker, Doubt Defying came widest on the turn to overpower Fastnet Tempest (IRE) (Fastnet Rock) by three-quarters of a length with a half-head back to Al Passem (Al Maher) in third.

Carrying the colours of Aquis Farm, the 5yo son of Not A Single Doubt advances his record to 8 wins, 1 second and 1 third from 17 starts with earnings of $377,700.

"It's really satisfying. He has made good improvement in these last few preparations," O'Dea said.

"He put together a really good record last prep and to come back and win impressively at Randwick first-up and then come and do this today, I think he is definitely on an upward spiral.

"It worked out well for him. There was good speed on and he was able to find a spot and get into a good rhythm and had plenty of room around him. He was strong late and I can see no reason why he won't get further.

"There's a benchmark race on the last day at Flemington but today's race might put him out of that but there's the Eclipse Stakes at Flemington, it's a crack at a Group race over 1800 metres on a nice big track and it might be perfect for him."

Doubt Defying (pictured as a yearling ) was a $45,000 purchase by 888 Equine out of the draft of Southern Cross Breeders at the 2015 MM Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

He is the second foal of the Listed Black opal Stakes winner Sarthemare (Street Cry) whose dual stakes-winning son Sesar has a date in the Group I Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) at Flemington on November 3.

Southern Cross Breeders consigned a filly by Dawn Approach out of Sarthemare to the 2018 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale with Belmont Bloodstock signing the ticket for $150,000.

After missing to Shooting To Win in 2016, Sarthemare was covered by Your Song last spring.

Doubt Defying becomes the 61st stakes-winner for Arrowfield Stud's Not A Single Doubt.
