The
opening maiden event at Sandown on Wednesday was supposed to provide Black
Caviar's second born Prince of Caviar with his first win, but at the post the
best he could do was second behind another very promising colt by Domesday.
Prepared by Darren Weir, Extra Brut showed good ability when finishing second
at Geelong on August 6, despite doing plenty wrong on that occasion.
This time around he was more tractable with John Allen in the saddle and found the
line strongly to hold off the much hyped Prince of Caviar and win the 1300 metre
contest by a neck.
"He has good ability. He ran very well at his first start and took a lot of
improvement out of that," said Darren Weir.
"We think ours is a nice horse, so I'm tipping this will be a strong form race.
"We're looking forward to getting him out to a trip and who knows how far he might
go this spring."
The runner-up Prince of Caviar hit the line well and the son of Sebring will
undoubtedly be better for the run.
Extra Brut was a $100,000 Inglis Classic purchase for Spicer Thoroughbreds from
the Grange Thoroughbreds draft and was a successful pinhook for Gary Mudgway, having
been bought first as a weanling at the Inglis Great Southern Sale from the
Stonehouse Holdings draft for $52,000.
Extra Brut is the second winner for Dom Perion, a winning Redoute's Choice
grand-daughter of French stakes-winner Charlotte Amalie. His breeder will be
hoping for further success from Extra Brut this spring as Dom Perion is due to
foal again to his sire Domesday.
A stunning son of Red Ransom (USA), Domesday is a proven source of Group I
winners and has been super popular for Aquis at their Queensland base. He stands
at a fee of $9,900.
