First Winner for Carlton House

Mark Smith - Friday July 20

After taking up the early running in a 1250 metre maiden at Taree on Friday, the Kris Lees-trained Peyton Place found plenty under extreme pressure in the straight to credit his sire Carlton House (IRE) with his first winner.

Ridden by Aaron Bullock, Peyton Place looked beaten when Huey drew level with 250 metre left to run. Sticking grimly to his task, Peyton Place won by a head from Huey with Elaborate (Excelebration) a half-length back in third.

A homebred for Bangaloe Stud, Peyton Place was coming off a debut third at Newcastle on July 7.

He is the ninth foal of the Redoute's Choice mare Doubtful Choice who is a sister to the flying Amelia's Dream the winner of the Group II Silver Slipper Stakes. Undefeated in two starts Amelia's dream's career was tragically cut short by injury.

A son of Street Cry (IRE), Carlton House was trained by Sir Michael Stoute. After breaking his maiden by nine lengths at two, Carlton House won the Group II Dante Stakes at York before finishing third in the Epsom Derby and fourth in the Irish Derby.

At four he won the Group III Brigadier Gerard Stakes before finishing second to So You Think in the Group 1 Prince Of Wales's Stakes. He rounded out his European career with a fourth behind Excelebration in the Group 1 QEII Stakes.

Carrying the colours of The Queen, Carlton House (pictured ) travelled to Australia to be trained by Gai Waterhouse.

He was denied a dream debut in the Group 1 Ranvet Stakes when run down by Silent Achiever.

At his final start, Carlton house finished third in the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes.

Retired to Darley Stud in 2014, he left 31 live foals in his first crop and 25 in his second before fading into obscurity.
