Third Stakes Win for Written Tycoon's Grande Rosso

Mark Smith - Saturday June 23

At the same meeting twelve months ago, Peter and Paul Snowden were celebrating the win of Written Tycoon's Tycoon Tara in the Group 1 Tatt's Tiara.

While they had no luck in this year's feature, the Snowdens struck again with a Written Tycoon when Grande Rosso in Saturday's Listed GH Mumm Stakes (1615m) at Doomben.

Ridden by Kerrin McEvoy, Grande Rosso finished best to defeat the heavily backed Noire by one and a quarter lengths with Hopfgarten a short-neck back in third.

Peter Snowden credited a gear change to the improved performance of the winner

"Taking the blinkers off him helped him to relax a lot better and he's been looking for the mile as well," Snowden told AAP.

"He was able to get the run of the race from the good draw today and it's really pleasing to see him find his best form again."

"We picked this race out for him some time ago and now he's learned how to win again we can look forward to more of these types of races in the weeks ahead.

"There should be something suitable for him at Grafton as long as we can avoid wet tracks.

"He's hopeless in the wet and once we knew the track was going to be firm here today we knew he was in with a top chance."

Previously trained at Lindsay Park, Grande Rosso advances his record to 9 wins, 6 seconds and 1 third from 36 starts with earnings of $555,860.

Consigned by Redbank North to the 2013 Inglis Premier Yearling sale, the son of Written Tycoon was purchased by Glenhuntly Lodge for $220,000.

Grande Rosso is the first foal of the Rory's Jester mare Jestemma a half-sister to Listed winner Spinning Jenny (Hard Spun) and the stakes-placed Philda (Secret Savings) a 12-time winner of over $433,000.

Another half-sister Soorena is the dam of Group I Newmarket Handicap winner The Quarterback (Street Boss) and the multiple Group II winner and Group I Australian Derby runner-up Philipi (Host).

Jestemma has an unraced 2yo colt by Bernardini named It's Tiger Time and a yearling filly by Helmet.

Sadly, Jestemma died a few weeks after foaling a Written Tycoon filly last spring.
