Frankel colt Without Parole followed in the footsteps of his famous sire by
winning the Group I St James's Palace Stakes (1m) at Royal Ascot.
Frankel won the race in 2011, but the John Gosden trained Without Parole ran
slightly quicker time than his sire in carving out the one mile contest in
1.38. 64 seconds.
Sent out favourite on the strength of three impressive wins in easier grade at
his only previous outings, Without Parole won by half a length for Frankie Dettori over the Coolmore
owned Galileo colt Gustav Klimt.
"I had to move
because Ryan Moore in front is very dangerous and when I got to him, I looked
and thought there was over a furlong to go and I'm a sitting duck here,"
Dettori told the Sporting Life.
"He's a proper little horse. He's a lovely horse - he's only run four
times, but to do what he's done, he's got a big future."
Trainer John Gosden said Without Parole had to be brave to win.
"It was a brave performance. He had to commit early and he will have
learned a lot," Gosden said.
"He had one run at Newcastle at the back-end (of last year) and he's done
nothing but improve, but there's still a lot more to come.
"I still can't see a rib on him - he's a bit tubby."
Without Parole is bred and raced by John and Tanya Gunther, who bred and sold Triple
Crown winner Justify.
They offered Without Parole at the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale, but when
bidding stopped at 650,000 guineas decided to keep the colt to race and the
rest is history.
"To breed and own a winner at Royal Ascot surpasses everything." John Gunther
said.
Without Parole is the fourth Group I winner for Frankel, who enjoyed a Royal Ascot
stakes double with his four year-old son Monarchs Glen winning the Listed
Wolferton stakes to close the program.
Without Parole is a half-brother to Group I winner Tamarkuz and has a US
pedigree on his dam's side being from unraced Lemon Drop Kid mare Without You
Babe, a half-sister to Group I winner Stay Thirsty.
