Magic Quartet for Sefton Park

Tara Madgwick - Tuesday May 22
Owned and operated by Colleen Buchanan, Hunter Valley nursery Sefton Park Thoroughbreds are presenting a select, quality draft of four at the Magic Millions National Weanling Sale on Thursday and Friday at the Gold Coast including a filly by the hottest sire in Queensland Spirit of Boom.

The last of the four to enter the ring for Sefton Park, Lot 499 is one of only three fillies in this sale by sire sensation Spirit of Boom, who is the leading Australian first season sire by winners with 16 in total, five of them stakes-winners!

This filly is a half-sister to two winners and comes from the family of Group I winners Assertive Lad, Assertive Lass and Reset being from unraced Testa Rossa mare Testalimit.

"This family is improving all the time and she can really walk!" said Colleen Buchanan.

Lot 26 is a nice type of filly by prolific winner getter Nicconi out of Ajawaan, a winning half-sister to multiple stakes winner Darcenell, the dam of another stakes-winner in Overplay.

Lot 150 is a cracking Rubick colt out of multiple stakes winning and stakes producing mare Edgeton. By a young sire whose first yearlings have sold for up to $470,000 this year, he is a half-brother to stakes-placed Umgeton as well as smart Hong Kong winner Adventurer, who was also bred, foaled and raised at Sefton Park.

Lot 298 is a filly from the first crop of superbly bred Outreach, a full brother to Golden Slipper winner Overreach. The filly is out of two time winning sprint mare Magic Lass, a daughter of Snippetson. She is a nice neat filly who has a 3 x 3 double cross of Snippets and shows a lot of his influence in her conformation.

Sefton Park Thoroughbreds is situated 5kms out of Scone in the Hunter Valley on the New England Highway within close distance to all major stallion farms in and around the area.

"We take great pride in catering for the individual horse needs," explained Colleen Buchanan.

"I limit myself to 50 mares during the season.

"The amount of seasonal mares I take each year depends on how many permanent broodmares I have to foal down and breed that year from my permanent clients, as I like to personally see to their needs each day."

Sefton Park offers a full range of services including:

  • Sales preparation for both weanlings and yearlings for permanent clients targeting two to three sales per year.

  • Rehabilitation for racehorses and broodmares.

  • Body building programme for breed to race clients.

An experienced equine vet nurse that has gained valuable knowledge throughout some 30 years within the industry working with many specialised veterinarians, Colleen Buchanan heads a small, but experienced and dedicated team that truly enjoy what they do and treat horses as individuals.

"I've only been operating as an individual for four years but previously was in partnership operating as Sefton Park Stud," Buchanan added.

"Some of the horses bred and raised over the last couple of years at Sefton Park include Salsonic, Adventurer, Bad Boy, Meghapushpa, Incomparable, Merciabelle, Bid Bad Baz, Righteousness and Wild Sea.

"Off the back of a very successful Inglis Classic this year, I have targeted the MM National Sales for 2018 presenting these four lovely weanlings, one broodmare in foal to Divine Profit and a race filly / broodmare out of the family of Gust Of Wind.

"We will also offer five yearlings out of good families by proven sires Sizzling, Smart Missile (2), Poets Voice and Kuroshio."
