Boom goes the 13th

Breednet - Friday April 20
A day after racking up his 12th winner, boom first season sire Spirit Of Boom produced the 13th.

Despite having the favourite in the Lockyer Produce Grantham Handicap at Gatton, it was the $10 "roughie" Supersonic Boom which proved too good in a convincing display.

Supersonic Boom's yearling shot.Having been put aside after racing greenly in a moderate debut at Toowoomba back in December, Supersonic Boom resumed with the blinkers on and after being backed in from $20 was never in danger.

The 13th winner brings him level with the performances of recent champion first season sires in Exceed And Excel, Not A Single Doubt and Stratum who all had the same number of winners in their freshman year.

There's obviously room to improve the figures though with over three months of the season left and in the last 10 years he now ranks behind only Rothesay (14), I Am Invincible (15) and Northern Meteor (18) for first season winners.

Supersonic Boom was offered at the Magic Millions Gold March Yearling Sale by Eureka Stud but was passed in on a reserve of $45,000.

With the Spirit Of Boom stock being red hot property this year, averaging $161,000 with 62 sold and selling up to $500,000, one would assume had he come a year later he'd have found a home and for quite a bit more.
