Lonhro's Kementari Devastating in Hobartville

Mark Smith - Saturday February 24

Saturday's $400,000 Group II Hobartville Stakes (1400m) at Rosehill boasted a field of the most promising three-year-olds in the nation but Godolphin's Kementari saw them all off in style.

The striking son of Lonhro raced on the speed set by Golden Rose winner Trapeze Artist and when Glyn Schofield released the brakes, Kementari put the race to bed in a matter of strides.

He kept up a relentless gallop to defeat the Greg Hickman-trained Pierata (Pierro) by a length with a nose back to Chris Waller's fast-finishing D'argento (So You Think). (photo Steve Hart ).

"We decided if he breaks well we'll be positive and see where he ends up and it was evident that I had to roll along a little bit to clear Ace High," Schofield said.

"I didn't expect Ace high to show so much speed, so he forced my hand a little bit but when he got there he had the smoothest run outside Trapeze Artist."

"I could have let him go and he would have dashed away at the top of the straight but he's had a bit of a look once or twice (in the past).

"But he's matured a lot more, he ran true, he ran straight and he was pretty strong.

"I was fairly soft on him late."

A half-brother to the Listed lonhro Plate winner and Group 1 ATC Sires' Produce Stakes runner-up Telperion (Street Cry), Kementari is the second foal of the Melbourne winning Redoute's Choice mare Yavanna who is a daughter of the dual Group III winner Wild Queen (Loup Sauvage).

Yavanna has a yearling filly by Reset and a colt foal by Street Boss (USA). She was bred back to Lonhro last spring.

Lonhro won the Hobartville Stakes back in 2002 while his champion son Pierro, the sire of runner-up Pierata, won the Hobartville Stakes in 2013.

Lonhro has four lots catalogued for the Inglis Premier and six lots heading to Easter.
