Watch for the Golden Slipper winner this weekend

Breednet - Thursday February 22

There's a big chance this year's Golden Slipper winner will be seen this weekend but while the biggest two-year-old race is the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes, the Slipper watchers should keep just as close an eye on Sydney.

Sepoy - the last horse to complete the Blue Diamond/Golden Slipper doubleFour of the last seven Golden Slipper winners were winners on the equivalent of tomorrow's card but only one of them was in the Blue Diamond Stakes with three coming from the Silver Slipper which is to be run at Rosehill.

It was Sepoy that took the Blue Diamond/Golden Slipper double back in 2011, but Pierro, Mossfun and last year's winner She Will Reign have done the Silver Slipper/Golden Slipper double since, with a third placing thrown in for Sweet Idea.

The Blue Diamond in the same period has produced placegetters in Samaready, third to Pierro, and Earthquake which finished second to Mossfun.

It's also worth noting that eight years back Crystal Lily missed a place in the Blue Diamond before taking the Golden Slipper and with the Blue Diamond so open this year that's got to be a chance of repeating.

So the chances are good we'll be seeing the 2018 Golden Slipper winner somewhere in Sydney or Melbourne this weekend and if you want to narrow that down to likely candidates then don't look too far past the favourites.

Of those four winners to win on this weekend in the past, the longest priced was Pierro as a $4.60 second favourite.
