Karaka 2025 – The Sire Break Up

Tara Madgwick - Monday November 25

NZB have released an outstanding catalogue of 1088 for their Karaka Book 1 and 2 Yearling Sales in January, so we’re taking a look at the leading sires and vendors to form a better picture of just what will be drawing the Aussie contingent across the Tasman in the New Year.

K1 is where the big business happens and Proisir will be the most represented sire with 53 to consider and these are the last of his yearlings bred from a modest fee with this crop conceived in 2022 at a service fee of $17,500… he now stands for $80,000.

Almanzor (FR) is next on the list followed by perennial favourite Savabeel with Hello Youmzain (Fr) to follow and his supporters will be hoping to see a few nice winners from him before the sale with his oldest progeny now two year-olds.

Snitzel’s Group I winning juvenile Sword of State is the most represented first season sire for Cambridge Stud followed by Waikato Stud’s Savabeel G1 winner Noverre, while the Coolmore based first season duo of Home Affairs and St Mark’s Basilica (Fr) are poised to make some sort of impact with 15 and 11 yearlings respectively.

Below is a graph of all the sires in Books 1 and 2 with ten or more entries.

On the score of vendors Westbury Stud leads the way when taking into account both books, while Waikato Stud is a clear leader as most represented vendor in Book 1.
