$800,000 Filly a Fitting Finale for Extreme Choice

Tara Madgwick - Friday January 10

The opportunity to purchase the progeny of Newgate Farm’s outstanding sire Extreme Choice was embraced by buyers at the Gold Coast this week with 12 of his youngsters offered in Book 1 and all of them were sold at an average $478,333.

His top seller came yesterday with the grey colt from Mrs Ramona G (USA) selling for $925,000 and then on Friday the last of his yearlings to be offered became his highest priced filly of the sale when fetching $800,000.

Consigned by Newgate as agent for the Newgate/ Gooree joint venture, the racy chestnut filly was bought by Michael Freedman Racing/Michael Wallace/Emirates Park and is from Group I winning Northern Meteor mare Speak Fondly, who comes from the family of Australian Horse of the Yar Bounding Away and more recently dual Group I winner Kenedna.

Extreme Choice has been running hot this season siring a surprise Melbourne Cup winner in Knight’s Choice and he also has two very exciting juvenile fillies in Bel Merci and Apocalyptic, who is trained by Michael Freedman, who was the co-trainer of Extreme Choice’s Golden Slipper winner Stay Inside.

“By a champion stallion that we have had a bit of luck with,” said Michael Freedman.

“Michael Wallace and I both loved her when we first saw her and we thought we’d put something together. Fortunately, Hussain Lootah from Emirates Park really liked her.

“I thought that filly was very athletic and I bought Apocalyptic here last year - not quite for as much money - but she was also a really nice, athletic filly so I think that when there’s not many Extreme Choices around, when you see one you like you’ve got to try and buy them.”

Speak Fondly produced another filly by Extreme Choice last spring.
