One to Watch – Wyong

Tara Madgwick - Thursday October 31

There would not be a better bred mare racing anywhere in Australia on Thursday than this one and she scored at Wyong with ears pricked.

Trained by David Pfieffer, lightly raced Fiorenza is by Juddmonte Farm’s star sire Kingman, whose fee for 2025 was confirmed this week at  £125,000.

A homebred for the Towell family, Fiorenza had two runs earlier this year in the winter when finishing second and sixth in a couple of midweek maidens on wet tracks and appeared to appreciate a firmer surface when resuming from a spell in an 1100m maiden.

Tuned up with a couple of recent trials, she was partnered by Jason Collett and coasted clear to win by more than a length.

Fiorenza is potentially a very valuable broodmare for the future and is a half-sister to four time US Group I winner In Italian, Group II placed Villa Carlotta and stakes-placed Fasano.

She is the fifth winner from five foals to race from Group III winning Redoute’s Choice mare Florentina, who was bought by the Towell family under their Jananth Pty Ltd T/As G Park Spelling Farm banner for $650,000 at the 2020 Inglis Chairman’s Sale when in foal to Kingman with Fiorenza the result of the mating.

Florentina with Fiorenza when she was born in 2020.

Florentina was bred and raced by John Camilleri’s Fairway Thoroughbreds and is a half-sister to Group I winner Gathering from the Twyla branch of the Dancing Show family that has also produced current Group I winners Desert Lightning and Tom Kitten, who runs in the $10million Golden Eagle on Saturday.

Florentina had a stint at stud in Europe where she was covered by the best sires which included Dubawi, the sire of her Group I winning daughter In Italian.

Sadly, Florentina has had some issues at stud and has not had a live foal since Fiorenza.
