The Te Akau principal purchased the youngster out of the Gr.3 Taranaki Cup (1800m) and Gr.1 New Zealand 1000 Guineas (1600m) placegetter Our Ella Bella from Pencarrow Stud's draft.
"We trained the mother and she was a filly of enormous ability and an absolute tragedy beaten in the 1000 Guineas," Ellis said.
"She was in the top two or
three fillies that Te Akau has had.
"When I went to Pencarrow and saw her Exceed And Excel colt I thought wow – he was a stunning colt, perfect for the Karaka Million next year and a lovely horse who will train on for the 2000 Guineas.
"I bought him for the Stallions Syndicate and there are no shares left, it's all full. I got the Snitzel for $625,000, the Savabeel for $1,025,000 and now this one."
Ellis said he had expected to go the heights he did to secure the Exceed And Excel colt.
"I thought he would be at least $700,000. It's very difficult to value them at this level. It depends on who else is on them – everybody sees different things in horses.
"He's from a great nursery and we've had Burgundy and Darci Brahma from them before this colt."
Ellis latest purchase also comes from the family of the Gr.1 Coolmore Classic (1500m) winner Plucky Belle and the Gr.2 Queensland Guineas winner (1600m) Winning Belle. – NZ Racing Desk.
