Aussie Owners Share in Fantastic Moon G1

Tara Madgwick - Monday September 2

The Group I Grosser Preis von Baden (2400m) had a short priced favourite in Dubai Honour, but he came up short when overpowered by last year’s German Derby winner Fantastic Moon.

Trained by Sarah Steinberg, Fantastic Moon was ridden by his regular partner Rene Piechulek, who won the 2021 Arc de Triomphe on Torquator Tasso.

The pair drew clear and held Dubai Honour at bay to win by a length and a quarter taking his overall record to seven wins from 13 starts with a trip to France for the Group I Arc de Triomphe his next assignment.

astic Moon was bought by Liberty Racing for €49,000 at the BBAG September Yearling Sale in Germany and is the first winner for Frangipani, a winning half-sister to Group III winner Fearless Hunter from the family of Group winners Germane, Kilmah and Four Sins.

The Liberty Racing syndicate also involves Australian bloodstock agent Suman Hedge and includes several Australian investors.

"Our next step is the Arc, and we're very excited about it," said Lars-Wilhelm Baumgartner, founder of Liberty Racing.

"Fantastic Moon is a superstar. He won the Derby for us on this type of ground, he won the Prix Niel on this ground and he needs this ground to perform at his best in the major races.”

Fantastic Moon is one of four Group I winners for Sea the Moon.
