In an exciting, but also somewhat emotional development for Widden Stud, a staffing restructure will be taking place, marking a new chapter in the esteemed history of the Valley of Champions.
These changes reflect Widden’s commitment to providing the best possible service to our clients and dedication to the thoroughbred industry.
In a move that underscores the farm's commitment to leveraging experience and expertise, David Merrick, who has served as Widden’s Stud Manager since 1992, will assume the role of Bloodstock Consultant. David's wealth of knowledge and decades of experience will be invaluable as he transitions into this advisory position, providing strategic guidance and insights based on his consummate knowledge, lifetime of experience and exceptional horsemanship skills.
Ben Walsh, the current Assistant Stud Manager, will take over the position of Stud Manager.
During his many years in the international thoroughbred industry, Ben has worked in Ireland, America and spent 8 years at Coolmore Australia before stepping into his current role at Widden. Ben's dedication and skills have been honed under David’s guidance during the last 4 years at Widden, and his transition to this pivotal role is a testament to both men’s expertise and leadership qualities.
Taking on the responsibilities of Assistant Stud Manager will be Tyler Frazer, whose passion for breeding and racing and great work ethic make him a natural fit for the role. With a keen eye for detail and a deep understanding of breeding operations from his time in the industry, Tyler is looking forward to his new role and contribution to Widden’s continued growth and success.
Not only was Tyler honoured as the HTBA scholarship recipient to complete the Irish National Stud course in 2019, but he has also worked at farms such as Arrowfield, Glastonbury, Darley America and Kelvinside, with his most recent role being that of Assistant Broodmare Manager at Yarraman Park.
Commenting on these changes, Antony Thompson expressed confidence in the newly appointed leadership team, stating, "We are excited to announce these changes, which represent a strategic evolution for our farm. As a team, Ben, Tyler, and David in his advisory position, bring a wealth of passion, talent and experience to their respective roles, and I have every confidence in their ability to provide the best care to the horses and advice to our clients."
As Widden Stud embarks on this new chapter, the farm remains steadfast in its commitment to breeding excellence, innovation, and the highest standards of horsemanship.
