The
$30,000 Starmaker Plate for two year-olds at Muswellbrook on Friday was
supposed to provide the Waterhouse and Bott trained runner Whitely with a soft
kill on debut, but that plan unravelled when the favourite missed the start.
Whitely never recovered and trailed in at the rear, while the Paul Perry
trained Denman colt Ragged Rascal improved on his debut second at the same
track last month to power home and win the 1000 metre scamper by three-quarters
of a length.
A $160,000 Inglis Classic purchase from the Yarraman Park draft for his
trainer, Ragged Rascal runs for Steve and Louise Gillard in partnership with
Perry and will no doubt be looking at the $500,000 Inglis Nursery on Saturday
week.
"His coat cleaned up a lot after his first run and the extra 100 metres suited
him perfectly," said Shannon Perry.
Ragged Rascal was bred by Pedrille Thoroughbreds and is the first winner for
stakes-winning Al Maher mare M'Lady Pedrille, a full sister to Group I winner
Diamond Pedrille and half-sister to stakes-winner Madame Pedrille.
The Pedrille family has become most notable in recent times for producing super
sire I Am Invincible, so Ragged Rascal has plenty of pedigree behind him!
