Never Too Old

Mark Smith - Saturday November 25

The final crop of 10 live foals by Hurricane Sky were born in 2011 so with his final crop now six year old's it's reasonable to assume we had seen his final stakes winner.

Well, think again. The 8yo gelding Zuccherosput in a career-high performance under William Pike in Saturday's Listed Carbine Club Of W.A. Stakes.

It was his 14thstart since his previous win at Belmont back in June 2016.

No semblance of fluke here either. Coming from well back in the field, the Adam Durrant trained gelding zoomed down the centre of the track to defeat Django (Trade Fair) by one and a quarter lengths with Properantes (Danehill Express) a length back in third.

"He's been working really well and all his runs this prep have been great," Durrant said.

I thought with some of the the better-credentialed horses having a few issues coming into the race, I said to Willie before the race we were going to be pretty close to the mark.

"I said to the guys who own him we will set him up for one this prep, this was the day and a pretty nice price."

The son of Hurricane Sky advances his record to 9 wins, 3 seconds and 9 thirds from 46 starts with earnings of $351,725.

Zuccherosis the first foal of the winning, stakes-placed, Redding mare Derring whose dam Metal Mistress (Metal Storm) is a sister to Group II WATC Karrakatta Plate winner Metal Master and dual Listed stakes winner Stormed Out and a half-sister to Listed winner Argumento (Ptotos).

Derring has a 2yofilly byVital Equine (IRE) and foaled a Snippetson colt on September 19.

Zuccherosbecomes the 20thstakes winner for dual Group 1 winner Hurricane Sky (Star Watch).
