Magic Day for Segenhoe -Ciaron Maher Lands $1.9Million Too Darn Hot Colt

Tara Madgwick - Wednesday January 10

Just when you through the day could not get any better for Peter O’Brien and the Segenhoe Stud team it did just that, when the Hunter Valley nursery produced their third million dollar yearling on Wednesday and fourth of the sale when the Too Darn Hot (GB) colt from A Time for Julia sold for $1.9million to Ciaron Maher Bloodstock.

Another blueblood bred by John Camilleri’s Fairway Thoroughbreds, the colt is the half-brother to stakes-winner As Time Goes By from Group III winner A Time For Julia and is from the second crop of Dubawi’s champion son Too Darn Hot, who will have a top chance in the Magic Millions 2YO Classic on Saturday in Arabian Summer.

“With the nice colts you always do(have to pay more). We probably had to go a little bit more than what we thought, but it was very competitive,” Ciaron Maher said.

“He’s really well bred, from a good farm and a good breeder.

“He’s (Too Darn Hot) done really well in Europe and we’ve got a few Too Darn Hots in the stable that are starting to hit their straps now.

“He’s a great physical, he’s got a really good mind on him and obviously ticks all the right boxes.”

Peter O’Brien was thrilled with the sale and delighted to achieve such great results today for his long time friend and client John Camilleri of Fairway Thoroughbreds.

“I’ve never had a horse in my entire life that so many people are on him,” said O’Brien of the star colt.

“He’s a beautiful animal. For want of a better word, he’s a real trainer’s horse – great balance, great action. We never, ever expected him to make that amount of money, but obviously he deserved it.”

The Too Darn Hot colt was one of three sold for Fairway Thoroughbreds on Wednesday for $1million or more, the other two were Snitzel x Warranty sold for $1.75million and Zoustar x Villami sold for $1million.

“We were going into today and we knew we had the Villami, the Warranty and him,” said Peter O’Brien.

“I was saying to John, it’d be touch and go who makes more between A Time For Julia and Warranty.

“It sounds funny being by Too Darn Hot, but he’s started off brilliantly here and we’ve been massive supporters of Too Darn Hot every year. John’s a big fan of the stallion and obviously the trainers think the same.

“John is always about quality. He’s got quality mares and sends them to quality stallions.

“He’s a pleasure to deal with. He’s got some of the best mares in the country, breeds them to the best stallions and he deserves the results.”

A Time for Julia produced a filly by Pinatubo (IRE) last spring and is now in foal to Too Darn Hot again.
